Sculptures – Summer 2010

Hortisculptures create installations that interact with and compliment the environment,
and have been displaying at festivals since 2003.
Our aim is to instil a sense of quality and permanence into the temporary nature of the festival event, providing spaces that the festival goers can immerse themselves within and be lost inside the art work.
Our installations are not just sculptures but fully landscaped and finished areas within themselves creating an other worldly ambience, and may be used in combination with music or performance art.
We now have several years experience creating major installations in festivals and have a great crew working with us, all experienced with site health and safety and construction and landscaping.
We have a selection of sculptures available, in a variety of scales and sizes, all to be installed with landscaping and planting that complements the sculptures to create the full Hortisculptures experience. The pieces are available individually or as a collection, for a sculpture garden effect (see picture above from The Electric Picnic 2009, where The Orchid, Triple Helix and Water Lily were incorporated into a pond with the Cacao lanterns).
The latest piece 'Tree and Pods' is still in the construction process but will be available for June this year, this booklet contains all our available sculptures and details the installation specifics.
For further details of bookings and prices please contact us, see details above.

Orchid
The twisting plant like form appears to grow from the boulder it rests upon, dwarfing the viewer through its disproportionate size. Within the piece nestles real plant life, symbolic of nature’s ability to reclaim man made materials and environments when left untouched by human activity.
The Orchid is around 4 m high and with the pond covers an area of roughly 25 m2 though this is changeable depending on the landscaping options available.
The photos show the installation in The Green Crafts Field, Glastonbury 2009.

Triple Helix

Organic architectural forms spiral asymmetrically from the upturned root of an oak tree
“Quercus robur” to be crowned by three copper bowls holding the elements of earth, fire and water. The installation incorporates a water feature which sends water flowing through the piece.
The Triple Helix is around 2 m high and covers an area of 1.5 m2

Water Lily
The curving delicate stems of the Water Lily spiral up from a boulder of glacial sandstone, using the golden mean proportion, to copper bowls cut with forms taken from patterns found in nature. The stems rhythmically move in the breeze, with fire, water and plants harmonizing in
balance within the copper dishes.
The Water Lily is 3 m high and covers an area of 2 m2 , though this is also ideally situated with in a pond and landscaped area which is dependant on site and location.

This piece was shown for the first time at the Electric Picnic last year

Cacao Lanterns
The lanterns are reminiscent of the cacao fruit from Brazil; each is slightly different in size and shape and has twisted strands abstracted from the original forms found in their natural setting.
The lanterns vary in size, all around roughly 1.5 to 2 m, and there are 10 available.
The Tree and Pods
This years new installation encapsulates and celebrates the form of the tree, enhancing the idea of a natural shelter by creating a sculpted dome around a live tree, embodying the shape of a weeping willow. A spiralling water feature cascades around the tree to a pond and lush plant life in the centre. The space invites the viewer inside of it's sanctuary to relax and become a part of the installation, and may even be used as an exotic and unusual sculpted stage and entertainment area.
The tree symbolises our interdependence with nature and the importance of protecting the natural environment. The tree is central to the sculpture and is protected by the man made structure surrounding it, yet in turn the tree offers shelter and support to the people who enter the space. We have all sat beneath an Oak tree and subconsciously felt the protection of the canopy above.
The pods are cocoon like forms designed to hang from trees or structures, where they will act as a refuge, as people may enter the pod and listen to the relaxing natural sound installations from within. The pods are installation of their own and may be hung independently from trees or within the larger installation.
The whole installation will measure approximately 10m in diameter, and approximately 4 m high covering an area of approximately 32 m2 . The pods will measure 2.30 m by 1.5 m, and there will be at least 3 pods available.
The photos show the artist's scaled model of the installation which is currently under construction.
